Featured Fridays: DJ Robb Rockwell

Featured Fridays would like to highlight one of our longest standing go-to-guys when producing an Ethos event: DJ Robb Rockwell. Chances are if you have been to a showcase, you have heard Robb spinning. Everything from classic Michael Jackson to the hottest newest music in between fashion shows. We started with Robb a few years back and he has always been there when we need him - a true supporter and believer in our mission.

We compiled a few photos of him in action at Ethos out of the dozens in our library:

In the first Ethos events, our “celebration” segment usually scheduled for 10pm or 11pm was a time for people to network, relax and dance to energized DJ sets after the fashion show. The showcases were over but the party raged on. Starting in March of last year, every Project Ethos event featured live art and encore fashion shows during its celebration segment. The new creatively robust structure would keep the showcases going all night long.

Working with Jin&Quinn and Michael Tronn of Avalon Hollywood, we added some amazing things to this time slot dubbing it the “event within the event”. One of these additions was an artist blowing up on the scene - James Haunt (introduced to us by our good friend Aaron Mostow aka Sum-In-1). After meeting with Haunt at his downtown studio, our minds were blown by both his art and a vision to paint live models on stage in an optical illusion of sorts. While models walked in encore fashion shows, and the DJ rocked the packed house, Haunt’s steady hand and laser like focus showcased a live art installation that would be talked about all year after.

First Things First in 2013

Happy New Year everyone. We are excited to get the year started but first, its time to let some phrases WAY overly used in 2012, finally go bye-bye.

Every year, Bill Rabe, public relations director at Michigan’s Lake Superior State University, compiles the most annoying into his “Words to be Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness” list.

Exchange LA

After nearly two years of careful renovations and retrofitting, Exchange LA opened. This historic building once again has come to life. The venue pays homage to its rich and opulent Art Deco past, spanning 25,000 square feet and four floors. Exchange LA is a vibrant venue that functions not only as a nightclub, but also as an event venue for private parties, corporate events, live entertainment, filming location, and fashion shows.

History:

The Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building began construction in 1929, just three days before ‘Black Thursday’ and the market collapse. The eleven-story Exchange building was designed by Samuel Lunden in the Moderne style of architecture. When the Los Angeles Stock Exchange opened its doors in 1931, the country was deep into the throws of the Great Depression. Transactions that inaugural day were valued at about $545,000 (about $7,650,000 in today’s value).

Los Angeles Stock Exchange and the San Francisco Stock Exchange merged in 1956, and became the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange, which remained in the building until 1986. The building largely remained unoccupied until it underwent a massive renovation into a nightclub in 2008. All construction was supervised under the strict building guidelines that protect Historic Cultural Landmarks, since the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange Building was designated as such in 1979.

Scion FR-S

We are excited to talk about official sponsor of LA Fashion Week at Downtown Art Walk, the Scion FR-S. Lets just put it out there - this car has groupies. After a spin in one around Toyota’s Los Angeles regional office in Irvine, we were impressed. Pulling up to valet for lunch at Irvine Spectrum, you would have thought we were in a Bugatti. Everyone was buzzing and our friend Amit from Scion was talking to people who approached him about their plans to get one. This car is nothing short of awesome.

Project Ethos always needs the support of corporate sponsors to deliver an amazing production while cutting costs for designers, musicians and artists to showcase. The Scion FR-S embodies passion in its design as Akio Toyoda (president of Toyota and grandson of the company’s founder) set out to create something special. And we can appreciate passion in design - we are certainly glowing over this creation.

Check out a great review on the vehicle here and lookout for the FR-S parked out front of Exchange LA on 10-11-12.

Across The Pond

London Fashion Week came to an end on Tuesday with over 110 designers showing their SS13 Collections over a five-day period. We look to our friends across the pond for inspiration for this week’s Trending Thursday picks.

Fashion

There is just something about this dress from Holly Fulton’s SS13 Collection that keeps me coming back for more. What a gorgeous piece!

Fulton details her signature style and objectives behind her creations here: “The ethos of my work is to capture a couture finish and an attention to detail within ready to wear…The use of decorative surfaces is vital within my work and I am constantly endeavouring to create a challenging yet beautiful surface which pushes the boundaries of modern fashion… My current signature style contains lots of geometric pattern lavished onto simply cut garments; big, luxurious, simple shapes with bold jewellery; bejewelled crystallised dresses and an eclectic mix of modern materials with a high end finish.” HollyFulton.com

I’d say she has definitely succeeded with this new collection.

Music

I’m infatuated with this song by AlunaGeorge. “Your Drums, Your Love” has such a catchy and simple beat and Aluna’s voice adds just the right amount of emotion to it all. It may be played several times a day on my laptop but that’s neither here nor there. Enjoy:

About the duo: “Having had their sound described by one fan as “advanced minimalistic polyrhythmic beats”, the only thing that is already clear about AlunaGeorge is that they can’t be neatly tucked away into any one box, what with bashment, experimental hip-hop, ’90’s R&B and house all dripping into their influence pot. Drawing on everything from Flying Lotus, Chris Clark and (their fan) Hudson Mowhawke to Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Mariah Carey, the AlunaGeorge catalogue promises fun times”. - AmazingTunes.com

Art

From illustrations to sculptures, it’s no secret that Arran Gregory has talent. Arran’s WOLF exhibition was featured throughout the entire AlunaGeorge video for “Your Drums, Your Love” and was set in The Victoria Art Gallery. He just finished a solo exhibition at the Print House Gallery in London earlier this month. Check out more of his work at: www.arrangregory.com
