First Things First in 2013

trending_temp_logo

Happy New Year everyone. We are excited to get the year started but first, its time to let some phrases WAY overly used in 2012, finally go bye-bye.

Every year, Bill Rabe, public relations director at Michigan’s Lake Superior State University, compiles the most annoying into his “Words to be Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness” list.

Across The Pond

London Fashion Week came to an end on Tuesday with over 110 designers showing their SS13 Collections over a five-day period. We look to our friends across the pond for inspiration for this week’s Trending Thursday picks.

Fashion

There is just something about this dress from Holly Fulton’s SS13 Collection that keeps me coming back for more. What a gorgeous piece!

Fulton details her signature style and objectives behind her creations here: “The ethos of my work is to capture a couture finish and an attention to detail within ready to wear…The use of decorative surfaces is vital within my work and I am constantly endeavouring to create a challenging yet beautiful surface which pushes the boundaries of modern fashion… My current signature style contains lots of geometric pattern lavished onto simply cut garments; big, luxurious, simple shapes with bold jewellery; bejewelled crystallised dresses and an eclectic mix of modern materials with a high end finish.” HollyFulton.com

I’d say she has definitely succeeded with this new collection.

Music

I’m infatuated with this song by AlunaGeorge. “Your Drums, Your Love” has such a catchy and simple beat and Aluna’s voice adds just the right amount of emotion to it all. It may be played several times a day on my laptop but that’s neither here nor there. Enjoy:

About the duo: “Having had their sound described by one fan as “advanced minimalistic polyrhythmic beats”, the only thing that is already clear about AlunaGeorge is that they can’t be neatly tucked away into any one box, what with bashment, experimental hip-hop, ’90’s R&B and house all dripping into their influence pot. Drawing on everything from Flying Lotus, Chris Clark and (their fan) Hudson Mowhawke to Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Mariah Carey, the AlunaGeorge catalogue promises fun times”. - AmazingTunes.com

Art

From illustrations to sculptures, it’s no secret that Arran Gregory has talent. Arran’s WOLF exhibition was featured throughout the entire AlunaGeorge video for “Your Drums, Your Love” and was set in The Victoria Art Gallery. He just finished a solo exhibition at the Print House Gallery in London earlier this month. Check out more of his work at: www.arrangregory.com

Your Choice

Its Trending Thursday - and your choice matters.

Fashion

New York Fashion Week has been in full swing and we are amazed at all of the technological advances and consumerism breaking into this usually elitist sector of fashion. Consumers can be a part of the process now instead of waiting months to walk into a store only to be told what buyers have chosen for them. Its the internet as usual giving the average Joe, or should we say Jane, a peek inside the tent and the ability to pre-order items. This trend is shaping what will be featured in stores and putting consumers in the front row.

Music

Have you seen Highway To Fame? Its a buzzing new reality series that features an old school music veteran and his family starting a record label in Nashville, TN. However this label is certainly not old school - it integrates fans into the process each step of the way through its dynamic website. And not in a “text-to-vote” way. Fans can dictate many different facets of the journey even down to songs on an album. This is something we love!

Tonight, 30,000 people will descend onto the downtown LA streets to experience and purchase their favorite art with the ever so smart monthly Art Walk. Trending Thursdays: Buzzing

Want to shop online, but still get the benefit of your local retail store? As in having it the same day? eBay is beta testing “eBay Now” allowing a test market of San Francisco consumers to receive a package hours after they order it. This online retail thing is getting serious.

Music

We looked at Neon Hitch at least a half a dozen times for Project Ethos. Just never worked out. Her brand new single “Gold” features Tyga and is co-written by Bruno Mars. Trippy because Tyga graced our red carpet many times, and Bruno graced our music stage. Small world! What do you think of her new single?

Art

We see Pinterest as an “Art” subject because it allows a person who doesn’t really regard themselves as an artist have some serious creative expression. Using google images and some personal inspiration, some of our friends have really shined. They also sort of became junkies in the process. Now Pinterest made it easier to get hooked unvealing brand new long awaited Android and iPad apps. Happy pinning!

Music

One word. Humananimal.

Downtown Art Walk is tonight, and we are excited. Past Project Ethos participant and Lab Art favorite Phil Lumbang will showcase his “Awesome Academy” as it takes a look into the “yearbook” of his universe of bear personalities at the Art Walk Lounge.

Trending Thursdays: Vintage Everywhere

“Vintage” has long been a theme obsessed over by the fashion world, but recently has made a huge re-emergence in other areas such as music, television, photography and marketing campaigns.

Popularized songstresses’ like Lana del Rey, Adele and the late Amy Winehouse all had multiple chart toppers utilizing their style of breathy, antiqued sound. In television, shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire have inspired specialty lines in stores like Banana Republic, red-lipped make-up for Estee Lauder and dolls for Barbie. The younger generation has even shown their interest by wearing the thick-rimmed glasses known as “Horn Rim” glasses as seen on many of these shows. They have been popularized so much that “Hipsters” all over have made it their trademark. The popular app, Instagram has made it a hit to over expose your photos and add vinegette touches to give the shot a dated and classic look. Even liquor companies have jumped on the bandwagon of the “blast from the past.” Bacardi recently took a photo shoot celebrating their 150 years and turned it into a commercial, where cocktail waitresses and partygoers alike are dressed in ‘50s glam.

It’s impossible to deny that this trend is here to stay for a while. Therefore, we suggest hitting up your local thrift store or your parents closet to dig out some of the classics.
